For the central area of Sacavém, the Praça da República, which is now mainly dominated by cars, trucks and busses, a new public space was designed to provide space for social interaction and space for green. New pedestrian areas and park areas are the core of the design proposal, having high standards on its public space design: layout, functional possibilities, materialisation, urban furniture, lighting, plants and trees. The proposal offers as well a system of various bus stops well- connected to attractive and safe pedestrian routes. The large roundabout, designed as a park, is needed to guarantee the existing and future regional traffic flows, and to guarantee safe pedestrian and cyclist crossing points. The existing national road is transformed into an urban avenue, including bicycle lanes.
